An event about peace in the Middle East and the Balfour Declaration
Presented by peace activist
Dr Sherry Joyce

This is a three-week series delving into understanding the Middle East from different perspectives and our relationship to the Middle East via the Episcopal Church and Memphis. Each week will build on the last. The first session was a survey on Islam and its core beliefs, taught by Memphis’ own Dr. Nabil Bayakly, an Imam and teacher at Memphis Theological Seminary. The second week will examine the core conflict in the Middle East, via a panel discussion with local people with connections to the Middle East. The panel includes Dr. Bayakly and Sherry Joyce, an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a long time advocate for Middle East understanding. The third session, led by parishioner Alice Shands and clergy, will reflect on the Episcopal Church’s resolutions concerning the Middle East and Calvary’s potential to support an ongoing dialogue about the Middle East.

Asslamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatu Allahi Wa-Barakatuh,

A local college student is doing a qualitative research project on Muslim women’s views of the hijab (each woman’s personal view, her family’s view and her home country’s view). She is looking for Muslim women who are at least 20 years old, who have migrated to the United States and who have a clear memory of their home country and culture.

Her goal in researching this topic is to foster the American understanding of Muslim culture and of the vast diversity within that culture. There are many messages about Muslim culture and the hijab being circulated in the media today. She wants to give Muslim women a chance to tell their story, to share what they think and feel about this part of their culture. Sisters’ translators will be available if needed.
All information she receives will be kept in strict confidence. If you choose to participate in her study, she will record what you say under a pseudonym that only she and you know. After the interviews are finished she will research the country each woman is from. All this information will then be presented by her at her university and possibly published in a scholarly journal or article. The Study is approved by IRB (institutional Review Board)

If you are interested in participating, please come to Masjid Ar-Rahman [7906 Lowrance Rd, Memphis this Saturday Jan 21st 2017 at 2PM (Right after Sisters Halqah).
Attending this meeting does not commit you in any way. It is just an informative meeting. Coffee will be provided!

Sincerely,
